Reading Prediction.

For this weeks blog post for reading, we had to make a prediction on why we think Vince Vawter wrote the book paper boy. We had three question and we had to predict off of those topics. Here is what I have predicted.
  • Why I think he wrote the story
  • Where he got his ideas from.
  • Why he wanted to share his story
(1. I think he wrote the story to share how difficult it is for kids & people like that to talk like others, and how hard and embarrassing it would be for people like that.

(2. I think he got his ideas from self experience. He was that boy in the story and he used to do the paper run for his neighbor hood.

(3. I think he wanted to share his story because he was once that boy that struggled, and had to go through the practice and the social awkwardness of not being able talk normally to the people he was delivering mail to.

  • Two thoughtful question for the author.
How much of a struggle was it with the stutter in your voice?
How much training did you have to train your voice to get better with everyday conversations.

Reading Creative Task

The following morning as i was locking my bike up, I peered over to where i usually meet up with Calvin to walk to class but he isn’t there? I start to walk around as i am scared because i can’t find calvin. Maybe he got suspended? Or maybe he is already in class? As i said that, the bell rings so i head to class hoping that calvin is there.

It was 5 minutes into social studies and calvin walks through the door. I feel bad for calvin because everyone is staring at him in disgust and annoyance. But i silently wave him over my way so we can sit together.  Disappointingly robbie is sitting a row behind me so hopefully nothing goes down.

As i’m writing down notes about the lesson, I over here Robbie saying things about being drunk and i can see that Calvin is clenching his fist’s into a tight ball as if he was going to spin around and swing. At this point i can tell that Calvin is in discomfort and anger, but then all i see is a quick movement as Calvin swings his arm back and makes contact with robbies jaw. This isn’t going to end well...

The whole class gasps and is all staring at Calvin and i not knowing who had done the damage. With the force of calvin’s punch, it had knocked robbie off of his chair and he was in an unconscious heap on the floor. At this point i didn’t know what to do, I was in shock and Calvin was breathing deeply so it was a little obvious that it was him that did it. Miss Gibson Had finally noticed about 5 seconds after the incident and Calvin end’s up turning himself in for his mistake. The last words I heard from Calvin until my later years were. “ I’m sorry, I let the anger get the best of me. So long for now my good friend.”  as i got home that afternoon, I crumpled onto my bed knowing that i wont see my best friend for a long time.

Matariki!

For my Matariki work for reading, I have been working on my last part of my activity and i completed it. Here is the finished product with the question that we were given.

What I now know about Matariki
Use full sentences to answer. Aim for 3-5 sentences for each question.

What is Matariki?
Why did Maori observe Matariki?
How did Maori traditionally celebrate Matariki?
When and how should Matariki be celebrated?
Select 3 of the te reo vocabulary words from the glossary. Write a sentence using each word.
Use your own words.

Matariki is the sign for the new maori new year. Matariki consists of 9 stars and 7 of them are known to
be sister stars.  Matariki is a constellation that happens once a year.
Because it signals the new year in maori tradition. It helps determine if the crops will be a good growing year. They Observe it so then they can say goodbye to the people that passed away in that year and so they
can welcome new born children into the new year.
Traditionally Māori would celebrate Matariki by
harvesting their crops. Playing games with everyone & keeping cozy and warm.
You should Celebrate Matariki in a way that is unforgettable. Matariki is like 3 days but you should still
Celebrate it with Respect and culture.

Words Into Sentence.
Nga Whetu =Stars
I am going too go outside and look at the Nga Whetu
Whanau = Family
Let’s go and spend some time with you Whanau
Hauhake = Harvest
When it gets too winter, I will Hauhake My crops

I hope you have learnt something looking at my work!

Reading, Matariki

Today for my Matariki progress. I have continued filling in the template and this is my second ansewer to the question that was given.

Q = Why did Maori observe Matariki?

  1. Because it signals the new year in maori tradition. It helps determine if the crops will be a good growing year. They Observe it so then they can say goodbye to the people that passed away in that year and so they can welcome new born children into the new year.

In my opinion, I think my progress is going well and i should be able to finish my task by the end of the week.

Matariki PT,2..

Today for my Matariki reading work, I completed Reading the online resource and also I started doing the Writing activity where we have four questions, and we have to answer them in 3-5 sentences.
This was the question I had to answer::
What is Matariki?

And my response was.
  1. Matariki is the sign for the new Maori new year. Matariki consists of 9 stars and 7 of them are
  2. known to be sister stars.  Matariki is a constellation that happens once a year.

I also found out that Matariki helps tell if you crops will grow good or bad.
I think doing this topic is fun and it is great to learn about the history behind it.

Reading Task

“Although the technology is almost here, bringing back the moa would
be a huge venture. It would take a large team of scientists and cost a
lot of money. There would also be no guarantee of success – and many
embryos and even live chicks would die during the process.”
- Return of the Moa (Berentson)

Your task is to write a persuasive paragraph telling the reader whether you think it would be a good idea
or a bad idea to bring back the moa based on the quote above.
What is your opinion?

In my opinion, i think we shouldn’t bring back the moa because it would cost way
too much and it is too dangerous for our environment. People would think that they
can destroy animals habitats because we can bring the species of animals and they can
adapt to the new environment. Also if there is no guarantee of success if they fail they
have just wasted a lot of money and time and the have killed a lot of embryos and live
chicks. So I disagree with bringing back the moa because we need to save the
endangered animals first.

Thank you for looking at this post!!

This Is a summery of my book!

by liz pichon. In the story so far Tom has been ok but his sister delia
has been stealing stuff off him. And at his school there has been a
bug going around and lots of people and one day the teacher had to
leave because he was sick aswell so the had to get the headmaster to
teach the class and for Tom it was surprising, it was fun.they also
have to do a business day at school and tom was in a group but he
was changed to a group with some of the weirder people in his class
because he wasn't listening. Tom has also been drawing some
pictures while in class and he has been making peoples names
into monsters. I think this is a great book and you should read it too!'
