Week 3 Blog Questions

  • how has food changed in the last 100 years and what have been the big reasons for this change? Food has changed in New Zealand so much over the past 100 years. 100 years ago, there was minimal variety in savory items, there were lots of vegetables and now if you compare it to this time period we have things like fast food, KFC, McDonalds exc... there are loads of sugary items and things to buy, there is so much more variety in food and options.
  • what could you see happening to food in another 50 years time More variety and more accessibility to items to make you own crations. i think that New Zealand food has changed so much in the past 100 years and i think it is going to continue doing that for a long time.
  • what could you invent or change that would create a large impact on how we gather, produce or eat food. I would invent a now type or storage that after the items like vegetables have been picked they can still be stored in a refrigerated area that could keep them fresh for longer so when we buy them from the shops they are more premium quality.

Storked - Workshop Discussion

If i was in Connors position, i would have saved the baby because if we also had a back story like what he has, it would just emotionally get to me and i would be full of regret if i didn't.

  • Storking is a legal process, but does that make it the right thing to do?
Yes storking is a legal process, but in my opinion i don't think it is the right thing to do. in my thought of mind, if you decide to have a baby, you shouldn't just throw it away onto someones doorstep to look after for you. Also i don't thing it is good because doing that can just make the baby sick and unhealthy. one last thing is you don't know ho\w that family is going to treat that baby so it is a potential threat to the baby's life by doing that.

  • Is it the mother’s responsibility to care for the child?
I think it is everyone responsibility to care for the child. as i said before you have brought a baby into the world so you have to do everything to look after it and care for its well being. and it should be more than just one person looking after it.

  • Can Connor offer the baby a better future than it would have if left there?
In my opinion if Connor end up getting away, the baby has a better future with Connor and Risa than it would if it was left out on the doorstep or with that family. If it goes with that family it has higher chances of being unwound due to the fact that they have been storked before so they already have a few kids to look after.

  • What risks does picking up the baby put on Connor, Risa and Lev?
The risks are that they now have to look after that baby and it will make hiding a tonne more difficult and they also now need more resources than what they needed before because they have to look after an extra person. and it also puts a lot of pressure on them and they have to make smarter decisions.

  • What impact does Connors past have on his decision?
Connors past has a big impact on his decision because he has been in that boys situation before when the kid says they have been storked again. But Connors family then passed it onto another family even though it is illegal but it got passed around the neighborhood but after two weeks the same baby came back but it was so sick it died. He doesn't want the same thing to happen to that baby.

Unwind Part 1

  1.  How much brainwashing do you think has happened for teenagers to make this sort of claim as they’re being led to their "death"?
I think they have gotten a lot of brainwashing for them to fully believe it. These kids are all being brainwashed and told things by their parents and they they are going to a place like school and then telling other kids things there

  1. Why, do you think, has Shusterman chosen to have three characters tell their story?
Because it gives the reader three different perspectives and three different upbringings and it also makes it more entertaining.  It makes the story so much more interesting as it gives a view of two people facing the unwinding and then it shows 1 religious person and their view on an unwinding.

  1. Lev is a tithe. This means that he is the 10% that his family will give back to the church as an offering. What are your thoughts on this?
I don’t think that is all round a good thing because there are many other things they can give as their “10%” but they are choosing to unwind their child and use that as their 10% offering.

  1. Rita is a state home kid - she was unwanted at birth, and now the state has decided she is no longer useful. Do you think that the state should ever be able to determine if one life is more useful than another?
No. I think it should be a person that knows her that decides it because they know more about the person than the state people.

  1. Connor's parents have chosen to unwind him due to his difficult behaviour. They have then booked a ticket to the Bahamas. In your opinion, how do parents view their children? Why do you think this?
In my opinion every family's parents treat their children differently depending on things like the gender of the child, the gender can affect what their parents expect of them and what they do for a career exc. There are also things like the age of the child. Younger children tend to get more attention than the older ones.

  1. Pastor Dan presents as being conflicted. What reasons might he have to encourage Lev in his journey as a tithe? Why does he encourage him to run?
In my opinion, i think pastor Dan told Lev to run because pastor Dan has seen Lev as an amazing individual and doesn’t want to see Lev get killed (unwound). Another thing could be that pastor Dan might have had a friend in the past that got unwound and he doesn’t want the same to happen to Lev.

Lawyer paragraph

Technology has changed the world so much by making it so much easier to do everything. The improvement of technology has made everything so much easier and it makes it possible to access information quickly using google, but if you use a book it could take forever. The creation of the internet has changed research forever. With this it makes everything so easily accessible and it makes it more straightforward and in depth. Another good invention was cars. Making cars has given people the option to travel a long distance in a quick amount of time. This is helpful because it is a lot quicker then walking and quicker than using for say a horse and cart. One last piece of technology is weaponry. Weapons from back then compared to now have made a big change and I can't decide if it was good or bad. But guns have helped people that are going hunting or people in the military because it gives people the choice to fight from a distance and without putting themselves in danger while trying to attack someone. These three examples have been helpful and have made life so much easier for people.
