Term 3 Art

This term we have been learning different painting techniques which we have been practicing to turn into a big painting. One of the things we have been learning to use is this thing called Gesso which is an Italian pronounced word which is a paint mixture with chalk or charcoal mixed into it. When we used this we had to spread it around as much as we could so when it dries it has a smooth texture. if you don't spread it around enough, there will be brush marks within the Gesso base. We also worked on blending colours together. My one i did was pink, blue and green and the other one was red to yellow but it ended up just going orange.

These two pieces are my having a go at doing a gradient. And the one on the far left is me doing a layering technique that miss introduced me to.
This is what i came up with when i was doing stenciling. The picture on the left is one of the stencil cutouts and the one on the right is what i came up with. This is me practicing using the Black and White Gesso. i didn't really get a good go at putting anything on the top of the gesso but it was run to spread around.
I learnt that these techniques are all very different from one another but they are all reasonably fun. I learn't how to spread the gesso around properly so then there aren't any brush makes in it.

  1. Kia ora Aiden, thank you for your post. Yes there is a definite technique to spreading the gesso. How do you think your time management is going in this class? Do you think you could work on that? It is good to see you are developing an understanding of colours and mixing too, with the stencilling.
