Distillation

On Tuesday we did a distillation activity and this is my report.
Our aim is to Distill the water out of the Coke.

Equipment:

  • Bunsen  Burner
  • Tripod
  • Heat proof mat
  • Gauze mat
  • Conical flask
  • Test tube
  • Beaker
  • Delivery tube
  • Retort stand
Ingredients:
  • ice
  • Coke
Method:
  • Set up all of the equipment as shown in the diagram

  • Add approximately 50mL of Coke into your conical flask.
  • Light your Bunsen burner and gently push it underneath the tripod with the conical flask on it.
  • As it is heating up and the solvent is evaporating make your you have the beaker with the ice in it at the end of the beaker so then the water vapor cools down and turned back into a liquid.
  • Heat your solution until most of the solvent has been evaporated from the Coke And then turn off the Bunsen burner.
Results:
We boiled the Coke and the water evaporated from the coke and then flowed down the Delivery tube and it cooled into water. A lot of the water was distilled form the Coke.

Discussion:
Distillation is a way of getting a liquid that has a lower boiling point separated from another liquid with a higher boiling point. When we did this we were getting water and we were separating it from the Coke.
The two processes are evaporation , That happens when a liquid (water) is heated up to boiling level and it creates water vapor.  Condensation is the last one that occurs when all of the water vapor builds up on the side of the glass or on the container you are using. Distillation is used to separate different chemicals that have been mixed together by evaporating the chemical with the lower boiling point.

Is there anything else you would like to know about this experiment?

  1. Hi Aidan, great blog, I really like the way you talked in detail about boiling points of liquids in your discussion, it shows you know what you're talking about!
Next time try take a photo of your experiment setup so I can see your personal results.
