Practice Paragraph

In the scene where K goes back to his apartment, the aspects of setting and acting were paired effectively to create an idea in the viewer's head.

The setting throughout the entire scene has a depressing vibe. As K is walking up to his apartment, the corridors are crowded, dark, dull and look rundown. And as he enters his home, it’s all empty. The only furniture is a singular deck and chair in the middle of a bare room. Throughout the scene, if you watch K, he doesn’t really ever raise his head. He looks emotionless but when he does show emotion it is filled with negative energy. He just enters his home, makes food and sits down on his own at his desk.

The director's purpose in combining these aspects in this scene was to poetry the message that K wasn’t happy with where he currently was. The setting really backed up the mood that he was showing.

This helps the audience understand that he isn’t happy with his current position. Everything in his surrounding area is worn down, dull and ruined. And even in his apartment, you can see that it’s empty and it looks extremely lonely.

The combination of the aspects setting and acting was put together extremely well to help show us how sad K is. This gives us the perfect starting point so then we can see the character change and progression throughout the film. As the film moves onward, his mood increases and you can see him looking more “Alive”.

The Cellist of Sarajevo

Define 3 words you do not know.
Cellist: A person who plays the cello
Fraudulent: obtained, done by, or involving deception, especially criminal deception. "Fake"
Rejuvenate: give new energy or vigor to; revitalize.

Identify 3 examples of emotive language
He would very much like to feel his father's hand on his shoulder again.
Now he doesn't care if anyone hears him play or not.
He will do this for twenty-two days, a day for each person killed.

What is the tone of the excerpt (author’s attitude towards what he is writing about) and what mood does this suggest (overall feeling of the text)?
In my opinion, the overall feeling of this text is quite melancholic as there are quite a few sad uses of emotive language throughout the text.

Identify an example of imagery from the passage (when something is described in vivid detail, making it easy to imagine) and explain its effect on the reader. How effective do you find it?
    Then the visible world explodes.

    Passion Projects.

For passion projects this year, I got together in a group with my friends; Kalim, Kayla, Lorelei, Tj & Kaleb. We had a goal to set up / produce a football tournament for the primary school next door. Our driving question was, “How do you set up a football tournament”. We had only just started working on it but then we were faced with the problem of the time limit. If we were to set up this tournament we would have needed more time than we had left which wasn’t going to work. We then had to come together as a group and review our options. After a little bit of discussion, we came to the conclusion that we are now going to work on creating a comedic football video where we have an expectation side then a reality side. Doing this it won't take very long to complete as all we have to do is a film and then edit the video so I think it will be able to be accomplished within the timeframe set.

For this all we will need is, A football, a phone and we will need to record on the school field.

Up until now, we haven't recorded anything but we have come up with a document full of different ideas and clips we can record. We will be presenting this through a comedic video.

"My son's life has become dominated by gaming" Article

    The article
    • Do you think this is common behavior for teenagers that game regularly?
No. Hostile behaviour like that isn't normal in gaming.
    • Do you think the advice given to the parent was good advice? Why/why not

I don't think that it is the best idea because there are other things that you can get him to do like find a new hobby. Professio0nal help seems a little excessive.
    • When do you think gaming changes from a healthy to an unhealthy hobby?

When it's a healthy hobby the kid is only spending a small amount of time gaming a day and not playing hostile games especially at the age of 14 as stated in this article.
    • Do you think screen time on social media or on gaming is more addictive?

I think there is more screen time on social media because most people use cellphones which are super practical and you are able to access social media at any time during the day. But also social media you can also get lost in a loop just scrolling through social media.

    Goal Setting, Mark Manson.

Chapter 1:Why should we have a mixture of specific and general goals?

Specific goals give you something to work towards the entire time but having too many specific goals might make a person do anything within their will to complete it, Cheat, Hurt people, etc...

A general goal is a general idea of something someone wants to achieve so the goal might drift and become misleading.

A good mixture of specific goals and general goals are good because you can have a specific goal to become rich and that will get you excited to achieve that goal which will give you that dedication, but then you also need the general goal to get a supporting job to back that up.

Chapter 2: What do we need to align our goals with? Consider how these affect your goals.

You need to align your goals with your personal values. If you don't it's just a recipe for disaster. People look around and see others doing specific things, working on their goals and then they think that they need to be doing the same and think they will get the same outcome. Sometimes specific goals aren't cut out for specific people but people still try and it ruins their social life, has a bad influence on the area around them or they can become really self-centered, and then that's a whole entire problem in itself.

    Reflection, 26th February

      Text Title:  Cinder

    Text Type: Book text

    Text creator: Marissa Meyer

    Text Purpose: Novel

    Date: Friday, February 26th

What Genre does this book belong to?

This book belongs to the novel section and is also a fictional story. I know this because in the story the main character is a cyborg with a metal hand and a metal foot. this character also has many brain features like being able to detect lies, download things straight to her brain which is rather fascinating to thing about. The main character has a companion named Iko which is a little android robot that can go retrieve, or take stuff away at request. From my knowledge i don't think anyone has any technology that is capable of doing activities like that all from voice activation whilst the robot being able to have proper conversations by free will. All of this seem very futuristic which makes it a fictional book.

What is the text about? How do we know?

From what we have read, the story is about a teenage cyborg girl who is the best android mechanic is the whole area but she has no interest in letting other people know she is only half human. This story's setting is very futuristic as there are android companions being there to help out. From what we have seen the people that live in the same town as this cyborg lady don't want their kids to go anywhere near her. In the end of the first chapter, its all about a kid who has "the plague" We have currently not found out what this plague is but Cinder (the main character) shut the door to her mechanic shop and sat quietly on the concrete floor not wanting to be heard so from this it suggests that the "Plague" is a scary terrible thing.

    Pompeii volcano reserch

This volcano is found on the edge of Pompeii, Vesuvius volcano is part of the Campanian volcanic arc that stretches along the convergence of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates on the Italian peninsula and had been erupting for thousands of years.  The last eruption happened in 1944 which wasn't the worst. it only ejected 0.01 cubic kilometres of material.  Mount Vesuvius, a volcano near the Bay of Naples in Italy, has erupted more than 50 times. The famous eruption occurred in the year 79 A.D when the volcano fully engulfed the city of Pompeii in a thick layer of ash. This eruption killed over 2000 people.  The city was re-discovered many many years later by a group of explorers in 1748.

Vesuvius of nowadays has a diameter of 700 m, a circumference of 12 km and is 200 m deep.
The ash cloud that engulfed the town was over 300 degrees centigrade

    Today we erupted our volcano's
    Equipment:
    Beaker x2
    15mL of warm water
    25mL hydrogen peroxide
3 spatulas of potassium iodide into the warm water
    food coloring of choice
    detergent

We made the volcano's with paper and glued it down with a mixture or flour and water.

Inside the volcano you will have hydrogen peroxide, food coloring and soap then in a spare beaker you will have the warm water and the potassium iodide then when your ready add the water and potassium iodide to the volcano.

    Gods Social Studies

    Unwind P.T 5 Graveyard

Which job in the graveyard does Risa get assigned to? How does this come about? P201
She gets assigned as one of the medic because she helped a kig with his bleeding nose so he wouldnt choke on the blood.

Why doesn't Connor volunteer for "work"? P205
Connor believes that the admiral is using the kids to gain money by sending them out to do physical labor for them and then giving them the reward of "18 year old identities"

How does Roland unsettle Connor? P206-207
I think Roland unsettles Connor by all of the knowledge he has about the place already even though they haven't been there that long. I think Connor starts believing what Roland says because so many of the things line up.

P208-209 detail Lev's arrival, and Connor's reaction. Make sure you fill in your character profiles for both characters.
When Connor sees Lev he has the mixture of happy and mad, because of all of the things he has done to Connor like bite him and rat him out. Lev seemed happy to see Connor and smiled as soon as he spotted him and went to walk to him. Connor them proceeded to punch him in the face with anger then hug Lev tightly.

P214-215 Connor learns the truth about the Admiral here. How does the Admiral gain Connor's trust?
While Connor and the Admiral were having a conversation one time, Connor bursts and speaks everything he has seen in attempt to catch the Admiral off guard and admit it. Connor said the he new the Admiral pick and chose who got unwound to get the body parts he wanted like his teeth for example, but the Admiral proves Connor wrong by taking out his dentures and explains that the kid in the photo is the Admirals son.

What, according to the Admiral, is it that Connor is becoming famous for in the Graveyard?p212
The Admiral thinks that Connor is becoming famous in the graveyard because of his repairing skills and all of the fighting.

    What happens to the Goldens?p217
The golden's were stuffed into the same crate that the original five kids suffocated in on the trip to the graveyard. The Golden's also suffocated.

How does Roland begin to assert his power in the Graveyard? (you'll need to look throughout the section)
Roland asserts his power by telling everyone that he was chosen specifically by the Admiral to be the Co-Pilot of the helicopter. They become impressed by him because of his age but he also offers out free rides which gets everyone to favor him over others.

P222-226 give us an insight into how the Unwinding Bill was passed into law. Summarise what happened, then explain whether or not you think it is plausible.
In the heartland war, there were three sides, the Life Army, the Choice brigade and the remains of the American military, the Admiral was on the military's side. The whole heartland war began because of an argument which had then turned into a war. One side was Going againsed abortion and murdering abortion doctors to get their point across and the other side was getting pregnant and selling fetal tissue. The military proposed the idea of "Unwinding" and both sides agreed.

The Admiral was there when the Bill of Life was signed - do you think this detracts from the believability of the commonplace nature of Unwinding? In your opinion, do you think the book should have a few more generations between those who signed the Bill, and the present state in the novel?
I think it kind of works having it as a single generation before hand because it helps tie in the fact that not many people know what happens inside of a harvest camp and they only signed it because it sounded right and it would also stop the fights.

What job does Lev volunteer to do? P236
He volunteers to help work on the oil pipelines.

Which part of Harlan Dunfree does Emby have? P240
Emby has one of Harlan Dunfee's lung. He was given this because when he was younger he was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, his lungs were slowly shutting down until he got the transplant.

Chapter 39 is from Roland's point of view. Why do you think Shusterman changes the narrative here? What do we learn in this short chapter?
I think he has done this so then we can see the story from a P.O.V of someone that isn't really a main character. By doing this we get more information about the story of things that Roland has dome without us knowing. All of the things he has done was to help get everyone in the Graveyard onto his side just in case something went wrong and he need people to back him up and make him look more powerful .

By the end of this section, things at the Graveyard have deteriorated, with the unwinds turning on the Admiral, and tearing the place apart. Which character is beaten to death on p250?
The character the is beaten to death it Cleaver

What does the Admiral refuse on p255? What is the doctor's reaction to this?
The Admiral refuses to have a heart transplant because he had a heart attack but he didn't want the transplant.

Why does Roland have the Juvey-Cops called? P259 Why doesn't his plan happen? P260-1
Roland calls the Jever-Cops because he Knows that he can get money for having them turned in.

                                    Unwind P.T.4 Destinations

This section opens with Lev in a pawnbroker's. What does this tell you about how his character is changing?
Because the early version of Lev wouldn't be trying to sell a stolen item and it is also showing that him hanging out with Ci-Ty has been affecting the way he has been acting.

While being transported to possible safety, some of the kids on the run wonder, "Would it be better to die or be unwound?" If given the choice, which would you choose? Why? This response requires more than one or two sentences! Put forward at least three reasons why you think what you do. I would rather die.
I chose die because i personally don't like the idea of my body parts being accessible for other peoples use. Another reason is that in the story if kids were running away from being unwound, it hints that it isn't a pleasant thing to happen so i would be on the same mindset. and the last reason is that it would be much more fun to run away from it and possibly die than to just go straight to the harvest camp and be unwound.

Another question the kids in the book discuss is, "If every part of you is still alive but inside someone else, are you alive or are you dead?" They also wonder if consciousness can exist even if it's spread out, and if the soul remains intact. What do you think? Read Thomas Hobbes' Ship of Theseus puzzle to help you make a decision. Be sure to reference it in your answer!http://metaphysicist.com/puzzles/ship_theseus/

This section of the novel sees Lev and Cy-Fi finally make it to Joplin. As they get closer, Cy-Fi's behaviour becomes increasingly erratic. What are some of the things he does, or things he likes, that are not his own behaviours or memories? He has memories of the place when he arrives even though he has never been there, he has a big urge to steal things, He started going slightly insane which these things wouldn't be his normal reactions to the things that are happening as he explains in the story.

What was Cy-Ty hiding in his backyard? Pg 185-194
He was hiding a big box of jewlery.

The section ends with Cy-Ty reaching his destination. What do you think of his parents' behaviour? What does Lev's support show you about his character?
His parents act kinda weird towards him being there but Lev is fully supportive which shows he still isn't fully changed and that he still cares about his close friends.

                                                          Thursday, October 15, 2020

                                                          Japan

Today in home economics, we have been learning different things about Japan and what they do about / with their food.  In Japan, they have got a much higher densely populated country comparing to to New Zealand. In Japan they have a population of about 126 million with 347 people per square Km but here in New Zealand it is only 15 people per square Km.

The packaging in Japan is very colorful and their food come in small portions. This give people more variety in what they eat. Chankonabe is the main food that is eaten by sumo wrestlers. This food gives them all of the necessary vitamins, proteins and nutrient needed for their weight gain and energy for training.

One of the main 5 islands is called Okinawa and they have a very high life expectancy of 83.7 and they also have people living longer there than anywhere else in the world.

An interesting fact I have learnt is the fact that japan is more densely populated than New Zealand by such a large margin.

                                                          Questions for you:
Can you name three different types of rice?
How do they grow rice on hills?
What is the healthiest type of rice?

                                                          Wednesday, September 9, 2020

                                                          Unwind Pt. 3 Transit

                                                          • In the course of the book, Connor and Risa get separated from Lev, who travels for a time with another character. Why do you think Shusterman chose to split the narrative into two distinct threads? What do you think this achieves? How does this affect the evolution of the characters?
I think he chose to split up the novel because it makes the reader think about what is going on more and it also shows the personalities of these characters. This gets shown because Lev ended up snitching on Risa and Connor. In my opinion Shusterman doing this got me thinking about the store that little bit more than i was before because it makes me think back to what happened previously with the character i am reading about. I think this effects the characters evolution because them being split up affects the chemistry between the characters but also the reasoning behind why they got split up because Lev was the one that snitched which made Connor and Risa have to run to somewhere safe.
                                                          • On p125 & 129  the novel touches on same-sex relationships. Has the attitude toward same-sex couples changed (for better or worse) in this futuristic society? Explain your response.
I think they have changed this for the worst because on page 125, it was hinted at that Cy-Fi had two fathers instead of a mum and dad and then on page 129 it goes over the fact that after Heartland war, they made same sex marriage illegal which in my opinion is a wrong thing to do.
                                                          • P130 begins our journey into understanding a little more about Cy-Fi. Through his character, what do you learn about the effects of unwinding on both the donor and receiver?
Well being a receiver for body parts comes with things like you might have muscle memory from the person beforehand dependent on the body part or you might have different thoughts about things or urges to do things. As shown with Cy-Fi.
                                                          • What is the real reason Cy-Fi need to get to Joplin, Mo? Pg 131
Because of the voice that is in his head that is telling him to go there.
                                                          • What is the significance of Connor holding in his anger around Roland? Pg 147
Because Roland is trying to get Connor to swing at him so then he has a reason to kill him without Roland getting in trouble. So if Connor doesn't react to it and keeps his temper down, he is potentially keeping his life because Roland doesn't have a way to cover up a murder.
